Houston, Texas is home to many political leaders who have devoted their lives to public service. From Anthony Hall to Mike Sullivan, these individuals have worked hard to make a difference in their community. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia is a native of Palito Blanco, a farming community in South Texas. She earned a scholarship to Texas Women's University in Denton, where she graduated with a degree in social work and political science.
Later, Congresswoman Garcia earned her Jurisprudence doctorate from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at the University of South Texas in Houston.

has also dedicated his life to public service. He began his career as a social worker and legal aid lawyer, protecting the elderly and young. He then served as director and presiding judge of the Houston Municipal System for five terms under two mayors.In 1998, he was elected municipal comptroller, the second-highest elected official in the Houston city government and chief financial officer. The areas within the district limits include Acres Homes, the Fifth Ward, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The Office of Emergency Management coordinates the city's emergency response and maintains the city's AlertHouston notification system.
